Titanium production was primarly developed for the aerospace industry, in its search for a strategic material lighter than steel capable of withstanding higher temperatures than aluminium alloys.
In other industries, the properties of titanium - light, strong, corrosion-resistant and non-magnetic - are being increasingly utilised, including the chemical, paper, cellulose and textile industries, plus electrical and mechanical engineering, cell construction, vehicles, power stations, in the energy industry and ocean technology, in the construction of desalination plants, in metal coating and in the complete galvanizing industry.
Due to the excellent compatibility with the human body and particulary with the skin, titanium is increasingly utilised in medical technology, the pharmaceutical and food-processing industry, in precision mechanics, optics, measuring, control and electrical technology, plus sport and decorative metals - and of course the first titanium knife in the world was produced in Solingen.
Due to the increasing difficulty of the reaction conditions of chemical production processes, in connection with bath compounds, concentrations of various materials, pressure and temperature, until now, only rare and expensive metals have proved themselves to be resistant to many destructive elements.
The durability of certain materials is limited, due the conditions, resulting in extensive and frequent repair work. These costs are higher than costs arising through the use of titanium. The resistance to corrosion by non-oxidising acids can be improved significantly by alloying titanium with 0.2 % palladium, as titanium's passivity is dependent on the presence of a protective oxide coating.
